You've heard the talk about the large amounts of greenhouse gases that cars produce, which is the major reason why the hybrid cars and electric cars were put on the market, but I am sure that you are probably wondering how much greenhouse gases cars create each year. I first want to explain that a majority of the gases from cars is not exactly from the cars but due more to the gasoline that it burns. A single gallon of gasoline will produce 19.4 pounds of CO2. This was determined by the Code of Federal Regulations. That's a lot of gases from a single gallon wouldn't you say. Now if you think just how often you are filling your car up each day or week and tally that number up for the year it's a scary number for just a single car. Here's what I got for my small car that I don't drive all that much based on only 20 gallons a week. My car generates 18,624 pounds of CO2 each year. That's one car that isn't big or driven very frequently. Now can you imagine what that total would be for all of the cars in the world. How much greenhouse gases do cars create each year isn't something that I want to think of often because of the large amount of damage that it is doing on a daily and yearly basis, and that's only part of the damage. Let's not forget about the pollution that it emits as well. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can really do about this, until electric cars are more affordable and created more abundantly. And I am not sure when this is supposed to happen. The burning of fossil fuels isn't just from cars, and regardless of the age old question, How much greenhouse gases do cars create each year there doesn't seem to be much hope for us to reduce the amounts of greenhouse gases that we are putting into our atmosphere. Most people want to leave it up to the next person, while that person is doing the same and nothing changes. Let's face it we all need to do what we can o reduce this problem. I am not saying that we need to get rid of all of the cars that we have, but we can car pool to work. This requires nothing more than maybe getting up a little earlier, but you will save money on the cost of gas and you will be reducing that high number of 18,624 a year to maybe half of that. |
